Introduction
Search for the evil eye meaning and you will find jewellery, superstition and a lot of confusion. In Islam the answer is clearer and more careful. This guide explains what the evil eye is, what the Arabic and Urdu words nazar, al-ayn and hasad mean, how the evil eye differs from black magic (sihr), and what the Quran and Sunnah teach us to do about each. It is educational, not a diagnosis. If you are unwell, please see a doctor first.
What Is the Evil Eye in Islam? Meaning of Nazar and Al-Ayn
In Arabic, al-ayn literally means “the eye.” It is the harm that can reach a person, a child, an animal or a possession through another person’s gaze, usually when that gaze is filled with admiration or envy and the viewer forgets to mention Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said that the evil eye is real (Sahih Muslim 2188; Sahih al-Bukhari 5740).
The word nazar you hear in Urdu, Hindi, Persian and Turkish comes from the Arabic word for a look or a gaze. When someone says “nazar lag gayi,” they mean the evil eye. If you were searching for the nazar Arabic meaning, the more precise Islamic term is al-ayn, and nazar simply means sight.
Two points are worth stating clearly:
- The evil eye is not luck. Some searches ask for the “lucky eye” or “evil eye good luck.” Islam does not teach luck. Harm and benefit are decreed by Allah, and nothing protects except Him (Surah Al-An’am 6:17).
- Admiration is not a sin. The evil eye can come from someone who loves you. This is why Islam teaches us to say Masha Allah, la quwwata illa billah when we admire something (Surah Al-Kahf 18:39).
Evil Eye (Al-Ayn) vs Envy (Hasad) vs Black Magic (Sihr)
These three are often confused, and the confusion leads people toward the wrong cure.
| Evil eye (al-ayn / nazar) | Envy (hasad) | Black magic (sihr / kala jadu) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Harm from a gaze of admiration or envy | A heart disease: wishing another’s blessing gone | Deliberate sorcery done by a person to harm another |
| Intent | Often none | Present, but may be hidden | Always deliberate |
| Usually follows | Being admired: a new baby, a business, a good result | Success or blessing someone resents | A targeted act, often involving a third party who performs it |
| Quranic reference | Surah Al-Qalam 68:51 | Surah Al-Falaq 113:5 | Surah Al-Baqarah 2:102 |
| Cure | Dua, ruqyah, the adhkar, and the washing method from the Sunnah | Seeking refuge, repentance of the envier | Ruqyah, Quran, dua, patience and tawakkul |
In short, the evil eye can come without bad intent, envy is a sickness of the heart, and sihr is a planned act of harm. The first two often lead to the third in people’s minds, but the Quran treats them as separate matters.
Signs of Evil Eye in Islam: What People Commonly Report
These are reported experiences, not medical or religious proof. Many of them have ordinary causes.
- Sudden exhaustion, headache or loss of appetite right after being admired or praised
- A baby or child who becomes restless or falls ill after attention from visitors
- A business or project that stalls shortly after a visible success
- Sudden family tension with no clear cause
The pattern that scholars point to is that of a timing link to an admiring or envious gaze. The signs of black magic that people describe tend to be longer and more targeted: repeated nightmares, aversion to prayer or Quran, persistent blockages in marriage or work, and unexplained hatred between people who loved each other. See our guide on kala jadu, nazar and protection for the longer list and the cautions that go with it.
Please do not diagnose yourself or others from a list. Anxiety, low iron, thyroid problems, sleep disorders and depression can look the same. See a licensed doctor or counsellor first, and treat spiritual remedies as additional support.
The Sunnah Remedies for the Evil Eye
The Prophet ﷺ taught practical steps. None requires buying anything.
1. Prevent it. When you admire something, say Masha Allah, tabarakallah, and make dua for blessing. A person who sees something he likes in his brother is told to pray for blessing for him (Sunan Ibn Majah 3509).
2. Seek refuge. The Prophet ﷺ used to protect Hasan and Husayn with: “U’idhukuma bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammatin wa min kulli aynin lammah” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371).
3. Recite the Quran. Ayat al-Kursi, Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas morning and evening, then blow gently on your hands and wipe over your body.
4. Ruqyah. The Prophet ﷺ permitted ruqyah that contains no shirk (Sahih Muslim 2200), and he told people to seek ruqyah for the evil eye (Sahih Muslim 2195).
5. Washing method. If a person is known to have caused the harm and is asked to wash, he should do so. This is a narrated Prophetic method (Sahih Muslim 2188) and is best done under the guidance of a knowledgeable scholar.
6. Keep your fard acts. Prayer, Quran recitation, Istighfar and halal earnings come before any remedy.

Protective Evil Eye Charms and Jewellery: What Does Islam Say?
The popular blue “protective evil eye” bead, ring or pendant is not from the Quran or the Sunnah. Most scholars advise against relying on it, because it gives the object a protective power that belongs to Allah alone. The Prophet ﷺ warned against amulets that carry such belief (Musnad Ahmad 17458).
This is a different matter from a manuscript made only of the Quran, the Names of Allah and authentic supplications. Many classical Sunni scholars, including those of the Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools, permitted this as a sabab, a permissible means, as long as the bearer relies only on Allah. Scholars differ on this, and some contemporary scholars discourage any amulet. If you want to understand the evidence, read The Fiqh of Quranic Taweez.
When Both Are Feared: Protection Against Evil Eye and Sihr Together
Some families face a lasting problem and worry about envy. It is not possible to identify a spiritual cause from ordinary difficulties alone. Recitation and dua are available without a purchase. The Complete Quran Coded Dua product is described as a numerical and letter-based register representing the structure of the 114 surahs, not as a guaranteed protection from sihr or the evil eye. Read the product information only if you want to understand the item and its confirmed contents.
