How to Perform Salat al-Istikhara Yourself
While seeking supplications from pious advisors is permissible, the ultimate beauty of the Sunnah is that you can perform Istikhara directly yourself tonight. Follow these exact steps:
Make Sincere Wudu (Ablution)
Perform complete physical and ritual cleansing with calm mindfulness, freeing your heart from agitation.
Pray 2 Rak’ahs of Voluntary (Nafl) Prayer
In the first Rak’ah, recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by Surah Al-Kafirun. In the second Rak’ah, recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by Surah Al-Ikhlas, honoring pure Tawhid.
Praise Allah and Send Salawat (Durood)
After concluding the prayer with Salaam, sit with hands raised. Glorify Allah with praise and invoke Salawat upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Durood Ibrahimi).
Recite the Authentic Prophetic Istikhara Du’a
Recite the exact supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ (shown below), mentioning your specific matter when you reach the words “hadhal-amr”.
Retire with Wudu and a Clear Heart

The Complete Istikhara Supplication (Du’a)
اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ [اذكر حاجتك هنا] خَيْرٌ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي، أَوْ قَالَ: عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ، فَاقْدُرْهُ لِي وَيَسِّرْهُ لِي، ثُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيهِ.
وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ شَرٌّ لِي فِي دِينِي وَمَعَاشِي وَعَاقِبَةِ أَمْرِي، أَوْ قَالَ: فِي عَاجِلِ أَمْرِي وَآجِلِهِ، فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي وَاصْرِفْنِي عَنْهُ، وَاقْدُرْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ، ثُمَّ أَرْضِنِي بِهِ.
Transliteration:
Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu anna hadhal-amra [mention your matter here] khayrun li fi deeni wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma barik li feeh.
Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna hadhal-amra sharrun li fi deeni wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, fasrifhu ‘anni wasrifni ‘anhu, waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kana thumma ardini bih.”
English Translation:
O Allah! If You know that this matter [specify your decision] is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me therein.
And if You know that this matter is evil for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me whatever is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”

Common Questions About Istikhara
Can someone perform Istikhara on my behalf?
Yes. While performing it oneself is the primary Sunnah, the classical scholars of all four schools of jurisprudence permitted asking a pious parent, scholar, or spiritual guide to make Istikhara and supplication on one’s behalf, just as the Sahabah would request the Prophet ﷺ to pray for their affairs.
How many times should Istikhara be repeated?
It is recommended in traditional Sunnah practice to repeat the prayer up to 7 consecutive nights if the heart remains undecided. With each repetition, clarity and peace progressively settle into the soul.
Can I pray Istikhara for something already prohibited (Haram)?
No. Istikhara is strictly for permissible (Mubah) or recommended (Mustahabb) matters where a choice exists between two halal paths. One cannot perform Istikhara to commit a sin or neglect an obligatory duty (Fard).
