The Spiritual Reality of Ziyarat in Islamic Tradition
In the orthodox consensus of Sunni Islam, visiting the resting places of the righteous (Ziyarat al-Qubur) is a beloved, recommended practice instituted by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet declared:
“I used to forbid you from visiting graves, but now visit them, for indeed they soften the heart, bring tears to the eyes, and remind you of the Hereafter.”
— Sahih Muslim (Hadith 977)
The Awliya (Friends of Allah) are those who purified their hearts from worldly vanity, lived in perpetual remembrance of Allah, and spent their lives serving humanity. Visiting their sanctuaries is not worship of created beings—which is strictly forbidden in Tawhid—but rather an occasion to:
1. Remembrance of the Hereafter
Contemplating the transient nature of this earthly life and remembering our ultimate return to the Divine Creator.
2. Sending Isal-e-Sawab
Reciting the Holy Quran (Surah Al-Fatiha, Surah Al-Ikhlas, Durood) and gifting the spiritual reward to the soul of the Saint.
3. Seeking Wasilah & Du’a
Beseeching Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala humbly in a sacred space where the mercy and light of God descend continuously.
4. Emulating Saintly Character
Inspiring our souls with the virtues of patience, generosity, forgiveness, and unconditional love exemplified by the masters.
